KUASAR UK Ltd launches development of a next-generation Crew Transfer Vessel (CTV)
KUASAR UK Ltd is delighted to announce that its application to Innovate UK Business Growth for an RTO/Catapult Grant has been approved.
This milestone marks the beginning of KUASAR UK’s development project for a next-generation Crew Transfer Vessel (CTV), designed to enhance operability while integrating low- and zero-emission propulsion technologies. The project will explore an innovative small-waterplane-area hull form alongside suitable low-/no-emission propulsion system architectures, aiming to set a new standard for efficiency and sustainability in offshore operations.
To support this effort, KUASAR UK has engaged Offshore Renewable Energy (ORE) Catapult and ODSL to carry out an expert study covering end-user requirements, sea-state conditions around offshore wind farms, and market analysis.
Noyan Kilinç, Co-founder of KUASAR UK Ltd, comments:
“We are embarking on this development project on our own initiative. The expert study by ORE Catapult/ODSL will provide valuable insights to guide our engineering decisions and help us make realistic trade-offs throughout the development process. We are especially grateful to Innovate UK for their support, which gives start-ups like ours the confidence and backing to pursue ambitious innovation projects.”
🚨 Financial support for shipbuilders and manufacturers
-
Inclusion in defined industry categories – These include “Maritime Capabilities” under the defence heading. It is unclear what this means for commercial shipbuilding.
-
Carrying out manufacturing activities – Manufacturing activity will be assessed on your reported SIC codes (which don’t distinguish between commercial and naval shipbuilding).
-
Meeting threshold of electricity intensity – the measure may be something like cost of electricity as a proportion of total expenditure or GVA. DBT are not yet clear what the threshold will be.

Tymor Marine Wins Coveted Industry for Groundbreaking Draft Survey App
Maritime technology specialist Tymor Marine has won the IT Solutions Award – Marine at the International Bulk Journal Awards, which were held at the Titanic Hotel in Liverpool on 17 November 2025. The award recognises Tymor’s development of DRFT MRKS, a groundbreaking app designed to improve the accuracy, reliability and digital traceability of the draft survey process.
Bringing together hundreds of international guests from some of the world’s leading maritime companies, the IBJ Awards are established as a benchmark for excellence across the global bulk shipping industry. The IBJ judges commended Tymor Marine for the groundbreaking nature of the app, which ‘revolutionises draft surveying by digitising and automating the process’.
DRFT MRKS uses AI and Deep Learning to analyse short smartphone video clips of draft marks and produce fast, accurate and verifiable readings, typically in around three minutes.
By replacing the subjective nature of manual draft surveys with a consistent, automated process, the app helps operators, shipowners and cargo stakeholders reduce discrepancies and improve confidence at loading and discharge.
A secure, time-stamped digital record is created for every survey, providing full audit traceability and an objective basis for dispute resolution. The app stores the last ten analysed videos in the free version, while subscription users have access to their full video library and extended functionality. This supports users who require repeatable, defensible data throughout their operations.
Draft Reading Discrepancies: A Costly Issue for the Sector
Measurement discrepancies remain a significant issue within bulk shipping. According to a 2023 report by The Swedish Club, 63 percent of claims involving grain bulkers were linked to cargo discrepancies, with an average claim of 35,000 US dollars. Although individual claims are often modest, the cumulative impact is substantial, making up almost half of the insurer’s total claims costs for grain cargoes. DRFT MRKS helps address one of the key causes of such disputes by reducing human error in draft mark interpretation.
The app’s AI-driven algorithms are trained to recognise draft marks even in challenging conditions, including rusted or faded markings, marine growth, wave swell and variable lighting. This allows the technology to deliver reliable readings in real-world maritime environments where visibility and precision can be difficult to achieve.
The video capture feature also allows data collection from safer distances using handheld devices or drones, supporting improved safety by minimising the need for close-proximity readings against the hull.
Although originally developed for shipping, DRFT MRKS is now being used in a wider range of scenarios, including semi-submersible operations, offshore windfarm monitoring, salvage operations, tide and water-level monitoring and flood-risk assessment.
The app was developed with the support of the University of Edinburgh, CENSIS and Scottish Enterprise, who helped refine and test the Deep Learning engine for use in real-world marine conditions.
Kevin Moran, managing director of Tymor Marine, said: “Bulk shipping has been central to the development of DRFT MRKS, and this award reflects the practical value the technology is delivering across the sector. Our aim has always been to provide a reliable, digital-first solution that improves accuracy, reduces disputes and gives operators confidence in their measurement data.”
DRFT MRKS is available for free download from Google Play and the Apple App Store. The app is compatible with iOS 12+ and Android 8+.

Celebrating 125 years of Heavy Lift History
Heavy lift specialists, Malin Abram, part of Malin Group have unveiled their 125 year anniversary exhibition, hosted in the Scottish Maritime Museum (SMM) in Irvine. Running from the 11th to the 26th of November, the exhibition showcases the history of this family firm, as well as wider developments within the Maritime industry and Glasgow region.
Established as the Steamship Strathleven company in 1899, Henry Abram and his subsequent family and colleagues built a recognised and respected ship delivery firm, which transported over 300 vessels around and across the world, before successfully diversifying into the specialism of heavy lift transportation in the late 1960s. Since this diversification, the firm (initially Henry Abram & Sons, and latterly Malin Abram) have worked on a number of iconic projects, from the ‘big blue golf ball’ and Queen Elizabeth aircraft carrier, to more recently, the Tay Whale, Wellsafe Saturation Dive Spread (SDS) and Type 26 frigates, HMS Glasgow & HMS Cardiff.
The firm, this year marking their 125 year anniversary, are delighted to be sharing the details of some of their highlight projects, as well as the history of the Abrams, with a view to demonstrate the importance of combining heritage and experience, with a desire to develop new, innovative and sustainable solutions. From additive manufacturing, robotics, and the integration of AI, to school STEM initiatives and community outreach, Malin wish to collaborate and develop, to reinvigorate the Clyde, as well as the wider industry – and hope that this interactive exhibition encourages attendees to learn more about the industry and potentially get involved.
James Bowie, Managing Director of Malin Abram, noted “we are delighted to be co-hosting an event at the SMM, showcasing the past 125 years – not only of the Abrams company, but also the wider shipbuilding industry. Many regard the maritime industry as one of the past, but we are passionate about showcasing the variety of new, innovative projects and the range of employment opportunities it offers. There is the opportunity to discover some interesting maritime artefacts, and get involved with our interactive CD01 barge model, loading various types of cargo. It is also lovely to be back at the SMM, with whom we have worked across a variety of STEM focused events as part of the Malin Young Engineers initiative.”
David Mann, Director of the Scottish Maritime Museum, adds, “we are thrilled to host Malin Abram’s 125 year anniversary exhibition. Heavy lift transportation is an integral, yet often unsung area of the shipping industry and it is great to offer our visitors this new perspective. Everyone will also enjoy taking in over a century of maritime development and Malin Abram’s exciting ambitions for the future.”
The exhibition will be open from Monday 11th November, running for 2 weeks. You can find more details about visiting the exhibition and the Scottish Maritime Museum at: https://malingroup.com/2024/10/29/celebrating-125-years-of-heavy-lift-history/
