HISTORY

Despite being a small country Scotland has a coastline that’s over 7,300 miles (11,800km) long and nowhere in Scotland is more than 50 miles from the coast. As such it’s not surprising that Scotland has such a rich maritime history. Boasting both Atlantic and North Sea ports Scotland’s sailors, engineers, designers and ships shaped the modern world. Today Scotland offers an unrivalled array of maritime skills. From ship building to nautical colleges, deep sea ports to fishing harbours, oil, gas and renewables specialists, ferries, freight, fleet management, training and support management, all within a very close geographic area.

Building on strong and globally recognised expertise, Scotland now offers ship owners a wide range of world class maritime services and support, with an emphasis on engineering, innovation and people:
Europe’s largest ship management cluster
World class naval ship design, build and support
Globally recognised support to offshore energy operations
Europe’s leading nautical training and personnel capability
Leading maritime universities and academics
A full range of professional support services
Scotland is home to the UK’s second largest cluster of maritime businesses

LOCATION

One of Scotland’s greatest strengths is it’s location. As a relatively small country none of Scotland’s myriad of maritime services are located far from each other, making collaboration easy. Scotland is well served by international and local transport links. London is a short flight away, there are daily connections to Europe’s capitals and main hubs and also to North America. Our oil industry expertise has led to Scotland enjoying close working relationships with many parts of the world. Internally all Scotland’s main population centres are connected by an excellent road and rail network.
