New Clyde Marine Technology Manufacturing Site

Malin Group, a member of the Scottish Maritime Cluster, have recently taken ownership of a large brownfield site on the bank of the river Clyde to support their long term goal of bringing more high value marine design and build projects back to Glasgow.

The site extends to 47 acres and is located upriver of the Erskine bridge on the north bank of the Clyde. It was previously a Royal Navy oil storage facility which suffered extensive damage during the second world war.

John MacSween, Managing Director of Malin Group commented: “The heritage of the Clyde is something we should be rightly proud of. We ourselves have been working on the River in the shipping industry for over 100 years. But there is a need to be looking to the future as well to ensure the long term success of the Clyde as a maritime centre of excellence. There are already great examples of this in the form of what is being done at BAE Systems and Ferguson Marine in the shipbuilding sector. Training and ship-management too are very well represented and the Department of Naval Architecture at Strathclyde University is a world class centre for research and learning in the marine sector. What we are hoping to achieve at our Carless site is to compliment these activities and bring other clients, companies and interests to the region. Our local harbour authority is doing excellent work in keeping our river open and navigable. We should be doing all we can to support them by attracting more marine business to the area.

We are looking to create a Marine Technology Hub which brings together providers of research, skills development, design, manufacturing and practical marine operational and logistics experience in a location that has complimentary facilities backed by direct access to the deepwater channel of the river Clyde.

Due to its industrial heritage the land requires considerable remediation before it can be put to use.  However to exploit our positive heritage, we must address the negative. Simply leaving it until the economics stacked up for a housing development would have been a shame and, we feel, a real missed opportunity.

New Scottish Maritime Group Aims To Increase Global Market Share

Industry collaboration vital in current political and economic climate

A group of leading maritime businesses have joined forces to create a new Scottish Maritime Cluster aimed at boosting economic growth and securing a larger share of the multi-billion dollar global maritime market.

The Scottish Maritime Cluster was officially launched by Scotland’s Minister for Transport and the Islands, Humza Yousaf at the start of London International Shipping Week (LISW) 2017.  As one of the world’s biggest and most prestigious maritime events, it provides a platform to promote Scotland’s maritime sector to the global industry.

New economic data released to coincide with LISW by Maritime UK estimates that the maritime sector in Scotland in 2015 supported 39,300 jobs, just under £9.3 billion in domestic output (through business turnover) and made a £3.6 billion contribution to the economy.  Scottish maritime companies account for more than 20% of the UK’s total maritime sector on these measures.

The Cluster will be led by a five-strong team of directors, with Douglas Lang, managing director at Anglo-Eastern UK taking on the role of chair, supported by Kevin Hobbs, chief executive at Caledonian Maritime Assets Ltd (CMAL); Patrick Carnie, strategy director, energy & marine technology at Babcock International; Colin McMurray, managing director at Clyde Marine Training; and Neil Amner, director at Anderson Strathern.

The leadership team has identified five key strategic areas as their focus: commercial shipping, naval / military contracts, maritime business support services, maritime legislation and education and training.

To support the Cluster’s work, Scottish Enterprise has provided funding for a one-year post for a network integrator, who will be responsible for producing a compendium of Scotland’s maritime sector and what it offers.

Membership currently stands at 40 organisations, including ship builders, ship management companies, naval architects and designers, maritime engineers, offshore energy providers and universities and other education and training institutions.  The leadership team is hoping to attract more member organisations and individuals, particularly those in the oil and gas sector.  In addition, the Cluster will reach out to businesses across sectors, including those not currently involved in maritime services, to help them consider how they might be able to make a potential contribution to the maritime sector.
